(2021-01-10) Homework routine and expectations:
(2021-01-10) Homework routine and expectations:
Math:
1 - Any unfinished math classwork (students are usually assigned 2-3 exercises from the textbook per math period) is to be completed as homework or in class during 'Travail individuel' (9 to 930 every morning) in the next two days.
2 - Students also complete a one-pager handout every new lesson as part of homework. The handout is placed by the student in their Math homework black Duo-tang to avoid losing the sheet between the class and home.
Notes:
* There is a peer-to-peer verification routine every day in class to keep track of any students falling behind in their math work.
* Students behind in their work by the due date are to finish the work either during our catch-up period on Fridays for completion or, if time permits, as homework or in class during 'Travail individuel' in the days leading to next catch-up period.
2. French verbs:
Students take a verb test every week (on Tuesdays usually). To keep up with the material and format of the tests, students are expected to review their French verbs worksheets 10 minutes daily as homework. Students keep any verb worksheet in their French verbs blue Duo-tang to avoid losing the sheet between the class and home. While all material to review should be found in the blue Duo-tang, I've added a link on the Resources page to a French conjugation website called Le Conjugueur for quick verification at home of any French verb form and tense.
Note: A printable blank verb practice sheet has also been added to the Resources page in the French section under the name Verb practice sheet for printing and practicing at home (students can also take printed copies home from the classroom).
3. French vocabulary and spelling:
Students add any new relevant French word or expression learnt in class in vocabulary lists sorted by subject matter and chapter under study. They keep their word lists in a specific colour Duo-tang (yellow for Social Studies and Science, for instance), to avoid losing the material between the class and home. Students are expected to review at home the vocabulary lists related to the chapter(s) and subject(s) studied at that time. In the week(s) leading to a test or quiz, students practice the words through activities both at home and in class. These check-ins provide the opportunity for students to use in context some of the French vocabulary learnt in class. The aim of this practice for students is twofold:
- knowing the meaning of the key words so that they understand the test or quiz questions well
- spelling the key words correctly in their test or quiz, as part of the mark is assigned to spelling.
4. Reading:
Students are to read every day 15 pages of a novel (either an independent reading novel or a whole class novel). For French reading, they use the Tennyson Library to borrow books in French every week and are asked to take at least one book out in French. Students are expected to read in French 2-3 times a week in class during the silent reading period.
5. English vocabulary and spelling:
Students will start the Wordly Wise spelling and vocabulary program during the Fall. More information on this routine soon.
